Cast iron is a material with numerous contexts in UK culture, particularly related to cast iron’s impact on society during the early part of the Industrial Revolution.Additionally cast iron has global themes, influencing as it has, civilisation’s development from the Urals to Sweden and Kentucky.

Cast iron which is man made, nature causes to rust; a consequence of nature’s interaction with a product of man’s labour. Additionally rusting cast iron changes colour from black to brown.

As a direction of colour change, this opposes the Peppered Moth’s 19th century change from brown and white, to black. The change related to the effect of industrial revolution pollution on the moth’s environment.

Accordingly on the Peppered Moth were visited certain consequences of man’s interaction with nature, changing the insect from brown and white to black; the opposite of nature visiting consequences on cast iron, changing it from black to brown. back
